Ring out the bells For the ones who got away Ring out and tell We’re here to make you pay Bring out your knives We’ll carve ourselves a creed These are our words And this will be the world that we’ll believe We stormed the palace, trashed the rooms Destroyed the chandeliers Stood waiting by the balustrade For a new life to appear It wasn’t very kind of us It was not smart or glorious Just fuelled by self-entitlement To all the riches we could spend All the sex and all the sugar We could fit inside our heads In the smouldering ruins We built ourselves a home Low-slung and white A prayer made from stone And the helibores grow Through the cold, ungiving ground A fragile kind of hope We could come and turn the year around We stormed the palace, trashed the rooms Destroyed the chandeliers Stood waiting by the balustrade For a new life to appear It wasn’t very kind of us It was not smart or glorious Just fuelled by self-entitlement To all the riches we could spend All the sex and all the sugar We could fit inside our heads No room for growth For roses or for weeds In your inorganic heart No space to sow a seed Still I lay on the bench And spread my tendrils out My frost-bitten friends Seeking frost to bite them once again Oh darling sister lost at sea I understand the plight you’re in But don’t you know these rocks you hold are slowly turning you to stone so Storm the palace, trash the rooms Destroy the chandeliers Stand waiting by the balustrade For a new life to appear I’ll meet you by the balustrade next year

Walk me through the park and I’ll point out the shining signals from your past Walk me to the door Because I’ve drawn every constellation that I know Walk me through this dark Because all I have are ancient fables I brought back From holidays abroad And things I think of when I’m restless or I’m bored Here’s my tiny map of Earth, please Come this far but go no further This experiment is over now All that we know Are childhood stories and the things we learned by wrote Galaxies unfold And we hold fast to things as children we are told This much we agree The world has many things But stars and such are out of reach If only like copernicus We could rearrange ourselves And build a new universe Our love is now A pulsar star beating discreetly in the dark This much we have gleaned From popular science on Prime time TV Let us not be a black hole down which our life and light must pour This experiment could be much more

The flat is cold It smells of smoke It smells of ticking clocks and other peoples’ homes It is a mess Oh what an embarrassing state of undress I am not here Just passing through Another set of boxes in someone else’s rooms Please ignore them You won’t notice them soon I have no plan I have no programme Just crazy visions and no one I can show them to Please just listen If it’s the last thing I do I made a choice A bold incision Not to be a victim of my own indecision Oh no not me mister No need to carry me home I must not doubt I must not falter Must not be sacrificed on someone else’s altar I must not call her Up to carry me home I must go on I’ve got to show them Through cold and blizzards Past statues and snowmen Time waits for no man No man to carry her home You know the rules Know how to work them You catch a little girl on every shining circuit You have a schedule And I will swallow it whole Today will be Another battle My mind breaks and my thoughts begin to scatter Time what’s the matter Why won’t you carry her home You must go on You’ve got to show them Through cold and blizzards Past statues and snowmen Time waits for no man No man to carry her home

Anastasia 05:00
There’s a full moon tonight You can find it outside or online In this digital twilight Where everything’s quiet, everything’s mine I see this is your first time So I’ll take it easy on you tonight But this is my worst light A bird in your headlights I try to be patient every time But my imagination’s like a runaway freight train What an urban creature But part of it hungers for the sea I’m the injured bird, oh I’ll be your girl with the broken wing And we’ll close our eyes Attempting to follow the sunken lines In the quiet of the ocean Beneath the storms and the raging tides I try to be patient like the sea But this digital silence is slowly destroying me Anastasia, Anastasia You’re wasted on the real world my dear Now repeat a thousand times Not ‘us’, but ‘you and I’ In this digital twilight Where everything’s quiet, everything’s mine I know I said that I’d be brave But you can’t see me shaking when I’m off stage Like the injured bird, oh I try to be patient etc…

The purr of the engine The scratch of the seat A few dimly lit signs Along dimly lit streets But further than this I just cannot stretch So they’ll be chewed fingers and bruised arms And some vague inner strength We all know stepping out from that bar From a forest of friends Would be an unpleasant affair The warmth of the evening Sounds of traffic outside Occasional foxes Throw their strange cries into the night Customer service Kept repeating our names As if we were still you and me As if nothing had changed A pointless procedure There would be no refund And no change of passenger name Just an empty seat on the plane So I’ll close my eyes and I’ll wait And I’ll hope that things change When I open them they’re still the same Nothing has changed
